Pontiac Repair: security system on the Ignition key, resistor code, pontiac firebird

Question
I have a 91 Pontiac firebird and the ignition key has broken piece on the security chip embodied in the key. No other key to this car can be found. The car will not start.

Answer
Hey Brian:

That suscks! but ther may be help. This car may just new enough that the dealer can run the vin# onm the car and it will give them the build codes for that car. one of the options will be the resistor code that is on the key. I'm not to sure how far back that feature in the parts catalog works. But that is the first choice. When you get that code you can buy the key that corosponds to the resistor # for the car and a key can be cut. second option is if the resistor is still in tact on the key but the car will not read it because the plastic part is broken away on the resistor that OHM reading can be read and then that resistance value can be matched up in a service manual. There are either 14 or 16 different values for those keys. If neither of those options work the last resort is to just pick and key resiatnce # and have that key cut to match the one you have and then you will need to buy a new pass key module that is behind the dash. They come new in the box not matched to any of the resistance values and the first time it's powered up when you turn on the key it learns the reistance of the key in the cylinder. Good luck :)
