Pontiac Repair: cooling fan not operating, temp gauge, tight job

Question
'97 sunfire. 2.2 ltr.  My fan does not come on and my temp gauge is starting to rise into the danger zone. The fuse is good. can the fan motor be replaced or does the whole fan assembly have to be replaced.  Is this a big project?

Answer
Hi Tammy:

The motor is serviced by it's self. It a VERY tight job to get it out of there but it's do able for the do it your selfer. Are you sure the fan is bad? Unplg the fan motor and get a 12 volt test light hook it up to the 2 wires for the motor and run the car if it has A/C and it still works turn that on the fan should tun on before the engine gets itno the "hot" range. if the light in the test light lights up the power and grojd to the motor are good and the motor is bad. If not then you have either a bad ground or power feed to the motor. Now that power feed can be a bad relay bad wire or the engine computer is not turning the relay on. With out an engine scan tool it's really hard to tell what's going on with the fan control. at that point it's out of the do it your selfer. Hope that helped you out. Good luck :)
