Pontiac Repair: 98 firebird 3800, turns over but wont start, starter solenoid, radiator cap

Question
I have a 98 firebird v6 3800 automatic, i have put another motor in it and it ran fine for a year, now for the problems... it started over heating and sometimes not overheating but running hot and it would bog down kind of like it was stalling, ive put a new water pump on , a new radiator cap and a new thermostat on, i think i may have solved that problem but im not sure because now it wont start...problem #2 i get one click from the starter, so i got under the car to take the starter off and i noticed a wire hanging down, it had been burnt in half, so i just twisted it back together to see if the starter would work and it did, but the engine wont fire up....im stumped, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hey Eric:

It sound like you may have fixed problem #1. as for #2 I have no idea was wire melted but I guess it could be for the starter motor. on the starter there is just 2 wires a large wire from the battery and a small purple wire to engauge the starter solenoid. have someone turn the car to crank and check to see if you have battery power on that purple wire while the car is in the crank position. If not trce the wire back and it may be the wire that melted. other possible causes are a bad ignition switch park neutral switch or an issue with the pass key security system in the car. The fact that it did click would more than likely rule out the security system because that eliminates the starter operation altogether. hope that helps some ? good luck :} Sorry My bad It's early and I just noticed you said it does crank now.. you have to see what's missing why it will not start. my guess would be it's missing spark but see if you have spark on each cylinder also see if you have fule pressure that engine needs a bit over 40 psi. if you have spark and fule pressure the only other things is fuel delivery. buy a tool called a noid light unplug one of the injectors and plug in the light and see if it lights when you crank the engine. the lamp should flash on and off. Okay now good luck :}
