Pontiac Repair: 2004 Pontiac Montana Speedometer Cluster, serial data line, pontiac montana

Question
2004 Pontiac Montana ext length, 3.4 l V6. During the 100,000 mile service, the service manager told us that the speedometer cluster had a short. The temp gage wasnt resetting. The fuel gage stopped resetting and I had enough. I found a used speedometer cluster on ebay and had a local repair shop install it. Does the onboard computer store the actual mileage? The air bag light as well as the ABS light wont go off. Is there a way to reset them as well as unlock the radio??

Thanks

Answer
Hey Danny:

Good question. I think the cluster keeps the milage in it no other module keeps track of the milage. as for the light's being on it can be a few things but first off was the cluster part # you bought off ebay the same as the one that was taken out of the van? If not that's the start of the problems. Next when the cluster is replaced you need a GM scan tool to set up the serial numbers so they match in the air bag module and the instermnt cluster. This has to be done at a GM delaership a genaric scan tool that a local repair shop has will not do this. As for the radio and abs lights on the abs light may be fixed but the serial # setup/relearn. I'm a bit stumped about the radio I don't think that should be related but you never know all the modules on this van are all connected to each other by a serial data line and if one of the modules "instermnet cluter" is not programmed correctly it can cause all kinds of issues. If you can't get it fixed correctly withe the cluster you bough from ebay an exchange cluster can be bought at any gm dealer for somewhere around $200.00 I would guess and then it would still have to be set up with the scan tool so your faced to goto the delaer to at least try to get this resolved. Good luck :}
