Pontiac Repair: 1998 grand prix, cant remove key from ignition or shift out of park., fuse box, shift indicator

I have a 98 grand prix and i am unable to remove the key from ignition and also it will not shift out of park. Also i noticed that shift indicator light on the dash flickers on and of when in park.

Hi Craig:

This car has either a bad ignition switch or a bad power feed to the ignition switch. What's hapening is when you turn the key to run it's not fully powering up the fuse box do to hight resiatnce some where like I said a bad set of contacts in the ignition switch or a bad power feed into the car. Usually the pass through bundle of wires under the glove box where is goes from under the hood to inside the car one of the red battery feeds corrodes or breaks off and it will cause this problem as well. It's one or the other. You can check for battery voltage at the ignition switch wiring with a test light what ever wire lights a test light dimly is the culprit and you will have to trace it back from there. Good luck :}
