Pontiac Repair: 1996 Grand Am SE - Problem with DRL, turn signal, and startup..., spark plug wires, drl module

Question
QUESTION: I talked to you like half a month ago so maybe you remember me. I had an issue with the DRL giving me trouble during the day and night, and you suggested to check the wires. So I did that, and found some corroded orange wires. So I fixed those, and it solved the problem at night. But during the day, the indicator on the dash is still flashing, and the lights are not coming on. I've checked every wire I can find, and the rest look fine. I swapped the drl relay with the with the isolation relay and got the same problem. However, when I take the drl relay out, and jump the 30 pin (dark blue wire) with the 87 pin (orange wire), the high beams come on at a lowered intensity. So as far as I know, that means the wiring has got to be okay. So what would you suggest I do now? Could it be the DRL module? Is there a way  I can check that or check the relays?

Also, another quick question I have is the turn signals tend to stop blinking. I think its from overheating or something. The warmer the day, the faster they'll stop blinking when I hit the turn signal. Maybe you could point me in the right direction on this one.

And finally, the car starts up really rough. Its not that it doesn't start, although sometimes it fluctuates so wildly after it starts that it'll die on me unless I give it some gas for a second. Its hard to explain, but I find I have to keep the key turned over just a little longer after the car has already started to keep her from dying. Then the RPMs will jump wildly up and down for a few seconds before leveling off. I checked the spark plugs and they seem to be okay, and the spark plug wires are just a few years old. So again, any advice would be appreciated.

Sorry for the long message, and Happy New Year.

ANSWER: Hi Marc:

You could have an issue with the module for the drl's. On this car it's the instermnet cluster that controls the drl's. You didn't mention do the auto headlamps work when it's dark out? if so it's not the photo cell that's bad that is a main input to the cluster to let it know if it's light or dark out and then what to do with the lamps either drl' or auto headlamps. You could have another input that your missing to the cluster as well. Maybe a bad ground to the cluster??? It could be a lot of things without seeing it it's hard to say. The cluter has the ability to store codes but without a scan tool your screwed on that. as for the turn siganls it could just be a matter of a bad flasher element they do go bad from ime to time. lastly as for the hard starting. you could have leaking injectors on this or dirty injectors. If they leak when yo ustart it it's basically flooded. you would have to check this with a pressure gauge on the fuel rail when the car is off it should hold pressure for a while and slowly bleed off after a few hours. If it drops rapidly it's either leaking injectors or a bad check ball in the pump assembly. You could have a plugged fuel filter and it takes too long for the pressure to build up enough for the car to run properly. I would also clean the throttle plate on this car and the throttle plate bore. It's more than likely all carboned up. You could have sotheing like a bad coolant temp sensor that's not reading the correct coolant temp in the engine if it's off by just a few degrees it will make the car run rough on a cold start. That is a main input to the computer for fuel delivery on a cold start. just a few ideas to look at.

Good luck :}

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick response. For DRL, the photoresistor does seem to be working. The lights come on fully at night, thanks to you advising me to fix the wires by the front impact bar. And if I cover up the photoresistor during the day, then the indicator stops blinking and the lights come on. If it is something with the module, its just not worth me fixing it. Is there someway I can disable the DRL completely so that the indicator doesn't flash?

Also, where exactly would that flasher element for the turn signal be located so that I could take a look at it?

And as for the starting issue, I'm gonna try to take a look at all those things this weekend.

Again, thanks for the quick response.

Answer
You can either pull out the drl relay the lamp may come on steady and not flash then I'm not sure. You can unplug the phot resistor and I think it will default to auto headlamps all the time. as for the flasher it's under the dash mounted on or near the steering column bracket. turn on the turn signal and listen for the ticking sound.
