Pontiac Repair: Display on radio, pontiac grand prix, pontiac grand prix gt

Question
I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GT and recently the clock and radio display quit working on the factory installed radio.  All other lights work on the radio.  Sometimes I can see it but it's very dim.  Can this be fixed?  If so, how.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Michelle:

Yep that is a pretty common issue on that vinatge radio. No it is not repairable There is something wrong with the digital display backlight. These are service by GM authorized repair centers. At the dealership we just order exchange units to put in customers cars. GM doesn't allow the dealerships to repair these units. They are usually about $200.00 depending on what radio this has EG: am/fm radio only or am/fm with cd player. That price is with an exchange meaning when the remanufactured radio shows up you have to give them your old one else wise they carge you a core charge. You can order one through any GM dealership. You may want to call around to a few salvage yards to see if you can get one from there cheaper. Just make sure it's out of the same year and model car. Good luck and happy holidays :}
