i have a 96 grand prix and it wont shift into 2nd or reverse

What transmission is in this this a 3 speed or a 4 speed? I'm not a transmission experts I actually try to avoid repairing them at all costs. But if this will not shift into 2 different gears then you have an internal failure of some kind. The transmission is going to have to be disassembeled to find the cause of the problem. Sorry to be the barer of bad news :(
