Pontiac Repair: 99 grand prix instrument lights, fuse block, grand prix 3

Question
I have a '99 Grand Prix 3.1L with 130,000 miles. I have a burning smell in my passenger compartment, rubber or plastic. Before I noticed this the right side of my panel lights went out (no biggie - bulb right?) That night it was on again. Two days later I noticed the smell. A few days later I notice the dimmer does control the radio / center console brightness but the instrument panel stays a weak dim. I have unplugged the light switch and noticed it is warm but not extremely hot. Of course my first thought was replace the switch but why would it work on the console but not the panel. I considered the parts replacement techique but its a $200 switch. 2nd thought was a toggle switch ;^) I am guessing I have a weak short in the instrument panel but wonder if this is a common problem. I guess I know what I am doing over Thanksgiving. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi
I scoured the schematics, and of course not having the vehicle is a disadvantage.
I will say that I see the switch DOES indeed have a dual dimming switch internal. It dims the Radio seperatly from other dimming outputs. So it is possible that the switch MAY be the problem.
I will also say to check the power and grounds for the dimming system.
I do not think you have a short... it would blow a fuse at some point.
A  poor ground MAY be more likely a possibility than a short.
The 2 grounds are....
G200
Right side of the IP cross beam, behind the fuse block
and
G201
Below the IP, on the right side of the steering column, on the steering column support
Please I hope this helps.
I am sorry for the delay also.
PLease follow post back, if needed.
