Pontiac Repair: rear window defroster, digital volt meter, rear defogger

Question
2001 sunfire 2.2 My wife's defroster stopped working, the light comes on and goes off. I checked and this 12+ to the defroster, but when it's all hooked up and I put the meter to the metal showing on the female clips It reads nothing. Can you offer any suggestions on what may be or where I should look next. This may be related or not, her back speakers will cut in they are off most of the time I've tried to see if there is a correlation between the two. any guidance is helpful. Her radio is stock cd electronic tune, red led display. My aftermarket book is no help with either problem.
Thank you for your help,
Keith

Answer
Hey keith:

The easy part first you more thank likely have 2 bad speakers in the rear of the car. if you have a digital volt meter check for ac voltage across the 2 terminals of the speaker if you do and it increases as you increase the volume it's the speaker. If not then it's a radio issue. Now as for the rear defogger. If you have 12 volts at the defogger connector with it unplugged and it's gone when you plug it in you have 1 of 3 issues. #1 The control head is bad not likely. #2 you have a defroster grid thats shorthed out and overlaoding the timer in the control head. #3 You have high resistance in that purple wire to the defogger. You may have a burned wire somewhere or a loose connection that arched and burnt up a connection. There are 2 connectos that the wire goes through before it gets to the rear window.  You have to trace the wire back from the window to find the issue. My guess is this is what the issue is and burnt connector somewhere. I have seen it happe quite a bit one of the connectos is on the left side of the dash board and I can't rememeber where the othe one is sorry.. Good luck on both issues :)
