Pontiac Repair: 92 pontiac, gauge needle, gas gauge

Question
my 92 pontiac gas gauge needle floats,  i never realy know how much gas is in there.  can this lead to future problems?  or is this normal for old cars?

Answer
Hey Joe:

Yep this is a VERY common problem. You need a fule level sensor inside the fule tank. the tanks has to come out and the fuel pump module removed and the level sensor on it replaced. The additives and high sulfer content in the fuel eats the metal contact up on the level sensor. Spend the extra money and get the part at a dealer the part is better than any after market ones you can get. Also while you are ther get a bottle of fuel treatment this is a special additive you add to a full tank of gas and it coats the level sensor so it's less apt to happen again. I suggest you get a bottle and put it in every 6 months or so. That stuff is like $13.00 a bottle. Good luck :)
