Pontiac Repair: oil light, piston slap, oil light

Question
QUESTION: hi, i have a 2004 pontiav montana 3.4 litre v6, the problem i have is when i start the engine, weather its warm or cold, the engine oil light stays on for approx.40 to 60 seconds after its started,iv been told that this is normal for these vans but in my experience of having numerous vechiles this is the first time i have ever seen this....thanks for any help.

ANSWER: Hey David:

If it's a change oil light ot check oil light it's not necessarily okay but not really a problem if the oil is full. If the red warning light comes on that's not good. if it's just the change oil light lamp you can re set it buy just turning the key on to run engine not running and quickly depress the gas pedal to the floor and back up 3 times in a row that will reset that light. Good Luck :)

QUESTION: hey todd, thanks for the advice, that was the problem, the oil light is normal now, goes off when the engine starts, but when i do start the engine and leave, for a few minutes i can hear a slight knock in the engine like it is taking a while for the oil to get up around the engine and then it goes away.....thanks

Answer
Your welcome. The "knock" you hear is pretty much a normal condition on that engine line. It's actually piston slap it sounds like someone shaking a spray paint can up. It's more than likely more noticeable after the car has say over night when it has been drive a long distance and got good and hot and then shut off. What happens is the pistons actually "rock" back and forth inside the cylinder bores until the pistons warm up and then they fit "tighter" inside the cylinders. These engine have done this for years and it will not adversely affect longevity or performance of the engine. I have see ones with over 100,000 miles and they are still nosey. Once again your welcome!
