Pontiac Repair: makes grinding noise while parking, strut mounts, power steering fluid

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I have a 1992 Pontiac grand am..While parking it makes a loud grinding noise when i turn the wheel..there's no noise when the car is moving..i checked power steering fluid level and the stick shows indication as hot which is ok i guess?? can you help me as to why it has this sound??
thanks for all the help..

ANSWER: Hi Kos:

Well without hearing it it's strictly a guess. If your in park and the car is on in incline you could be hearing/feeling the engine vibration in the car. This is a normal concern. however if it's steering related that's not normal. You say the noise is only there in park? does it change when the steering wheel is turned? Again without hearing it it's hard to say what it is. Sorry I can't be of to much help....

QUESTION: what i meant to say is that there is no sound in park but only when i turn the wheel(while parallel parking--noincline)--this only happens at 0MPH and not when the car is at any greater speed.

thanks for all the help.

Answer
Okay that makes more sence. It's more than likely comming from the poer sterring system. The pump may be going bad or you could possibly have power sterring line that are old and worn out and they are vibarting and causing a shutter type feel and noise. usually you can feel it in the sterring wheel if it is indeed power stering related. You could alos have a dry suspension component ball joint, tie rod end etc. The upper strut mounts on these cars make a really wierd noise when they start to bind up. Just a few ideas. Hope that helps :)
