Pontiac Repair: 97 grand am, fuel pressure gauge, grand am gt

Question
I have a 97 pontiac grand AM GT, 3.1 SFI v6.
My problem is that recently while I've been driving my car just suddenly turns off. I took it to my mechanic and he had told me before about changing the oxygen sensor, which I haven't had the chance to do so yet. But it was running fine till recently and it has cut off several times during one trip. When I maintain the rpms at a constant rate it seems to run fine then when I accelerate a bit more the rpms dont rise and it turns off, and in other ocassions it just does. My personal guess is the fuel pump, your help would be appreciated greatly, as with this I could decide which to fix first, the sensor or the pump, if it is in fact the fuel pump.

thank you for you time,

Alex

Answer
Hey Alex:

You are more than likely on the right path. if the engine will not take a heavy acceleration and falls on it's face it's either running out of fuel or the computer is running is extremely lean and it will not accelerate. It could also be a partially plugged cat converter. putting an Oxygen sensor in is not going to fix a stalling issue. it may be setting a lean code because it's running out of of fuel. The best thing to do it drive it with a fuel pressure gauge on it to see what's going on. I'd find another person to take your car to to get it fixed. Good luck :)
