Pontiac Repair: voltage is low /idols high, auto parts stores, auto zone

i have a 93 grand am quad 4 starts fine but volts are low around 10-11 volts light stays on and when i turn heater on idol goes up to around 2100 rpms. i replaced batt. it stays charged im stumped .

Hey Shawn. you more than likely have a bad alternator on this car. or something else like the belt is slipping on the alternator. if the battery is not being charged when the engine running the "battery" light is on at the dash. if you can drive it to one of those auto parts stores like auto zone or advanced they check you charging system for free. But it sounds to me like it's the alternator.. The engine is running wierd because of the low battery voltage.
