Pontiac Repair: 1994 Pontiac Transport - White smoke from engine, engine oil dipstick, pontiac transport

Question
Hi Todd,
We have a 1994 Pontiac Transport with a 3800 engine.   It has white smoke coming out of the engine (near a pipe on the manifold). The smoke has a bad odor.  It doesn't seem to be antifreeze steam or exhaust. Every time the car is turned on this happens and is continuous.
Do you have any ideas what this could be?
Thanks,
Rick

Answer
Hey Rick,
where is this pipe? On the exhaust Manifold? is it the pipe that goes to the EGR valve? Does it come out of the tail pipe as well?  Any type of white smoke would indicate steam so it would have to be antifreeze/water. If it were an oil on start up it usually stops with in a few seconds.  The oil would be more of a blue/white smoke. If it's antifreeze it has a sweet smell. If it's antifreeze then I would have to say that it's a head gasket issue or something with the heads or the block causing the engine to burn the coolant mix. Pull out the engine oil dipstick and look at the oil if it looks white or tan in color then for sure it's burning the coolant. If this is the case DO NOT drive it take it some place to get it diagnosed and fixed. Water in the oil will cause major engine damage!
Sorry I can't be of much more help?
