Pontiac Repair: 1997 Pontiac Sunfire 2.4L twin cam, 1997 pontiac sunfire, pontiac sunfire

Question
1997 Pontiac Sunfire 2.4L twin cam, will not start.  It has been sitting still and not started for over a year, while I was in Iraq. It has a half tank of gas. The battery was dead, but I brought a new battery. Now I can't get it to start or turn over. Please advise. Thanks for your support.

Answer
Hey Sally.

Does it do anything at all when you turn the key? do you hear the starter motor make a "click" noise when you turn the key? if not then the starter motor is not even trying to engage.. it could be a whole host of things.. If the car was sitting outside I have seen all kinds of rodent damage to wire harnesses in engine compartments. You could have a bad connection at the battery or a bad ground wire on the body or engine block. Does any of the electrical things on the car work? radio head lamps etc... When you try to crank it do the head lamps dim or go off? It's really hard to give you an answer as to what's going on? If could be just a bad starter motor. That engine the starter is in a bad spot to try to tap on it while someone is cranking the engine. Sometimes the motor has a dead spot and by tapping on it it jars it off that spot and then they start. Will I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help..
