Pontiac Repair: MY CAR WILL NOT GO., pontiac firebird, hub area

Question
I RECENTLY BOUGHT A 95 PONTIAC FIREBIRD 3.8 V6 AT A PUBLIC AUCTION. AFTER BUYING IT FOR 600 DOLLARS I JUMPED IN AND STARTED IT, IT RUNS PERFECT BUT WHEN I PUT IT IN GEAR I HEARD THE TRANNY ENGAGE BUT AT THE REAR END I CAN HEAR A CLICKING/CLACKING SOUND THAT SEEMS TO ME AS SOMETHING BROKEN BUT I HEAR IT AT BOTH TIRES AT THE HUB AREA. HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS THAT MIGHT MAKE THIS AS EASY AS POSSIBLE FOR ME TO REPAIR? THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Answer
Good question it could be a multitude of problems. My shoot from the hip answer is a broken pinion gear or ring gear in the rear end. get it towed home jack up the rear of the car and safely place it in jack stands and block the front wheels and start it up and put it in gear and see what's turning and what's not turning... This is a tough one. Good luck. Hopefully it's not an expensive repair but if you bought it for $600.00 as long as the body is good on the car you are a head of the game. If indeed in the rear end of the car that's bad get one from a junk yard and put it in you'll be further ahead than repairing that one. Just make sure it has the same gear ratio that your car has. EG: 3.42:1 or 3.73:1 else wise your speedometer will be off. Good luck with it.
