Pontiac Repair: power loss, system diagnosis, many different things

Question
1997 pontiac grand am,2.4 just started happening, i will be driving along and my air bag light will start flashing and then my abs light comes on and stays on and then the cars power just shuts down completely.  when i pull off the road i put the car in park and sometimes when i try to start it right back up i hear a clicking so i turn it off and back on and then it starts right up and i drive on....  some mechanics say its the alternator, some say the ignition.  the dealership has worked on my ignition 2x's the past couple years. i just put a cd player in the car a couple weeks before all this and at night after this has happened when i hit the brakes my head lights dim.... what do you think?

Answer
Hi
Sounds like either a bad battery, battery cable bad ground or alternator.
I know thats alot, but it really could be just a loose battery connection.
I would really take it to one of the mechanics and get them to preform a good electrical system diagnosis. The vehicle shutting down and clicking REALLY makes me think a battery issue, more than an alternator. Although the ABS USUALLY is low system voltage.... Could be the ALT.
I would have it checked locally. Too many different things need checking.
I wish I could help more.
Good Luck
