Pontiac Repair: Ignition Lock, gm parts, time and money

Question
The key won't turn in the ignition of my 2004 Pontiac Grandam.  I'm being told that the ignition lock needs replacing.  How do I go about removing the old one and installing a new one??  Do I have to take it to a mechanic or is it something I can do myself? ...Thanks.

Answer
Hi
FIRST thing I would do, is take your title, regerstration and proof of insurance to your local GM parts department at the dealership.
Have them cut you a NEW key from the VIN, not a copy cut, act like you lost your key.
Take it home and try it. I would say 75-80% of the time the key is at fault, NOT the ignition lock.
I would not recommend doing it yourself, but if you wish to try.
Try the key first.... see if this dont save you ALOT of time and money.
If not follow post back if needed.
Good Luck
