Pontiac Repair: 1996 Grand Prix fuel pump, prix fuel, gm vehicles

Question
I have a 1996 Grand Prix GTP my son ran out of gas and we haven't been able to start it since putting gas back in it. It acted as though it was not getting any gas. I have checked the pump fuse and the relay clicks when the ignition in on. I changed the fuel filter then checked to see if any gas would pump out with the line disconnected and the key on......nothing. Is there a reset switch anywhere on this car for the fuel pump? I can not find one. Would have the pump gone bad if the gas ran out and he kept trying it?

Answer
Hi
Sounds like the pump.
Yes the fuel pumps in GM vehicles are MORE LIKELY to fail when ran low or out of fuel, due to the fact that they are cooled by the fuel they sit in (pump located inside the fuel tank). Newer pumps (some 1996 & up)are mounted in a plastic "module" and the fuel is constantly surrounding the pump.
That being said, I would check first to make sure you have power going to the pump and a good ground circuit.
If these check OK, you'll have to drop the tank and replace the pump.
I hope this helps.
JUST advice from experience.
Good luck
