Pontiac Repair: 95 Pontiac speed sensor, speed sensors, driven type

Question
I am working on a 1995 Pontiac Grand Am.  It is a 4 cyl. with a 5 speed transmission (MT-2)- front wheel drive.  In trying to repair the speedometer (electronic), we have changed out the speedometer, speed buffer and the computer.  While checking the speed sensor, I noticed that someone had put in one that is a driven type.  I felt down into the tranny where the sensor goes, and it feels like it has the impulse ring which would mean that it takes the Hall effect type of sensor.  The parts store people list an automatic type sensor and one for a standard also. We ordered one for a standard transmission and it is just like the one that we pulled out.  Could you shed some light on what type of sensor this transmission takes? I believe the transmission is an MT-2.  It is hard to find a breakdown on these year models.  You're reply would be very much appreciated.
