Pontiac Repair: 98 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L Automatic (engine? noise), pontiac sunfire, power steering pump

Question
Recently my wife's car started giving off a whining sound whenever you step on the gas peddle.  It is kind of high pitched and is louder at higher speeds.  We just had the power steering pump and the belt replaced and it is a little quieter but not much.  This noise only occurs when in gear.  I even tried it when travelling at a high speed, put it in neutral and the noise disappeared.  It came back on as soon as it was put back into Drive.  Any ideas?

Answer
Hi
My first advice would be to remove the belt, start car and run it a few moments (a few moments wont hurt anything, just dont run it longer than say 1-2 minuets)and see if the noise goes away totally.
If so you have an accessory driven problem (alternator, a/c compressor, water pump, etc...) andthing driven from the belt.
If it does NOT go away, there are a few things that could make a whine noise, so I would go have it professionally checked by your local mechanic.
Just advice from experience.
Hope this helps
Good Luck
