Pontiac Repair: 1999 Sunfire, vacuum hoses, pontiac sunfire

Question
Hi Larry, my daughter has a 1999 2.4 automatic Pontiac Sunfire convertible approximate 112,000 miles.  Just recently she said it started running rough then just quit on the side of the road.  I tried to start it several times but no good.  It just cranks and cranks and does not fire.  I had it towed then after it was removed from the truck discreditable it started and ran for about a hour at idle then it stalled out again during the test ride.. I checked the obvious such as the gas, air filter vacuum hoses etc.. Any ideas?

Thanx
Doug

Answer
try the ignition module and or coil pack thats usually what ahppens to the quad 4 motor s whne thye wont fire
they have under the metal cover in the center 2 coil packs and 1 module, 1 coil fires 1and4 and the other fires 2 and 3 , im suspecting its the ign module , check with a test light to see if you have injector pulse, remove the two wire injector lead from the top of the injector on the front of the motor and use a noid light to test it, if you have pulse then the crank sensor and cam sensor are ok those trigger the module ass.you can prob go to a local salavge yard and get the coilpack and module assembly for 40. to 50 bucks good luck
