MY 1998 Pontiac Sunfire air condition does not cool. It blows but it is hot air. Does it maybe need freon

Maybe.
You really need to go get it checked.
Most major chain repair shops (Meineke, Midas, Pepboys etc..) offer a free A/C system check.
I would advise you to take vehicle to one of these facilities, and have it properly diagnosed so money is not wasted.
Just advice from experience.
