Pontiac Repair: 1992 firebird, poor fuel economy, fuel consumption

Question
my 92 bird with v6 motor is only getting between 9 and 10 mpg is there something i should check to get better mpg thanks

Answer
Hi
There are ALOT of possible causes for poor fuel economy.
If you were my customer,I would ask you to keep track of your fuel consumption for a few more weeks and then come in and we'll go over this data.
Things you can do or consider doing would be get a major tune up, plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, get the coils checked for proper voltage output, get a fuel system cleaning, etc... I would also maybe get your catalytic Converter checked, making sure it is not hindering performance.
Other items I would ask or YOU can tell a mechanic...
Is your car having any preformence issues?
did this high fuel consumption  happen suddenly?
What mpg has your car gotten in the past?
Is there any "funny" things happening while driving? (eg transmission shifting funny, etc...)
Get the brakes checked, make sure they are not dragging.
All these things plus more can affect fuel economy, plus other things, such as driving habits, weather, landscape in your area, city/highway driving  etc....
My best advise would be to take it to a repair facility YOUR comfortable with, sit down with the owner or mechanic and go over these things with them.
I beleive you should be getting about 15-20 highway driving with this engine, trans, differential set up.
JUST advise from experience.
Good Luck
