Pontiac Repair: power problem, modern cars, abs light

Question
1999 pontiac gram am se 2.4 4 cyl 60000 miles

Well I started driving my car today at work . Then the battery light came on. I was starting to think that it might be my car stereo draining the car since i replaced it the week before back to the factory stereo and the display wasnt staying lit. But anyways i kept driving my car pulled over and double parked and pu the blinkers on and the car wouldnt start so i had the car jumped by a friend and started to drive home . Then the ABS light came on then the airbag light came on then all the lights on the dash came on and the whole panel reseted and and went on and off and then i finally parked the car. I'm starting to think the computer on the car is broken . But i wondering if you have see anything this strange before.

Answer
What has happened Brian is your alternator has died and needs replacement. The reason all the lights are coming on is because there isn't enough power running the car and the computer issn't able to work properly without enough power. When the alternator died the car began running off the battery only and modern cars have a high draw rate and need a lot of power to run so they will drain a battery fast. Once the avaiable voltage drops below 11 volts there is no longer enough to power the ignition and fuel injection so it will stall. The only other possibility is that the serpentine belt has failed but this would still mean that the alternator is not being driven to make power and if this was the case then the water pump would also not be spinning and it would rapidly overheat also. Hope this helps and good luck :)
