Pontiac Repair: Shifting from park, shift lock, shift out

Question
Hi, I have a 2000 Grand Prix. which recently wont shift out of park unless you  use the shift lock release. No problems with the key just the shift.Any ideas? Thanks.

Answer
if it is a floor shifter there are two solenoids under the shifter column one of them might be bad.there is also a switch above the brake pedal the may be at fault.this will not allow the shifter to come out of park unless the brake is applied.that switch sends a signal to one of those solenoids under the column and lets the shifter release.a repair manual on your particular vehicle will be helpful in locating the components on your system.
