Pontiac Repair: 94 Grand Am Loose Steering Cloumn, pontiac grand am, tilt column

Question
I have a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am SE w/V6.  A few days ago I noticed that the tile steering column was loose.
The whole column moves back and forth at least a half inch.
Is this dangerous?  Is this something I can fix at home?  I am a fairly good mechanic but hardly ever work on anything newer than a 1970 car.  I have never worked on a tilt column.
This is our only car, and my wife spends nearly two hours a day commuting back and forth to work.
I do not want her driving something dangerous.  We are also very strapped for cash, so if I can fix it at home it would be a great help.

Answer
Hi, this could be dangerous, this could be the joint that is worn, a screw has came loose, or the lock is not holding it tight, try putting it in a new position and see will this hold it from moving. if this don't work then it will have to come out. If you have to take it out let me no I will help you.
