Question -
Why do lifters make a ticking sound and can this damage the engine?
1997 Bonneville Pontiac Sedan SE
Answer -
The lifter will loose pressure  and when they do it will cause the valve to tick, this can cause damage to the rocker arms.
Can the lifter be fixed so it does not loose pressure?
What are the rocker arms? Are noisy lifters involved in the circulation of oil to the enging?

Answer
No the lifters can not be fixed has to be replaced.
The lifter circulat the oil to the rock arms.By the way of a part called a push rod. The push rods has a hole that goes through it, and the lifter pumps oil through this hole to the rock arm.
The rock arms is the part that works the valves.
If this ticking is bad you may need to have it checked.
