Pontiac Repair: wont start, but has power, pontiac grand am, safety switch

Question
My 1996 Pontiac Grand AM will not start, the battery is new.  Sometimes the key will not come out of the ignition, there is not a button. Now the key is stuck in the ignition and it will not come out. The headlights and inside lights work. Is there a safety switch that will not allow the car to start for some reason?  It is also leaking antifreeze, could this be related in any way. I know it may sound unrelated but my car had this problem before and I can't remember all of the details.  Thank you. Any ideas will be much appreciated.

Answer
Hi Emily, this sound like the ignition. you have a ignition switch on the steering column under the dash. It has a rod runing from the key switch to the ignition. The key may not be leting the rod push the ignition enough to make it start. yes there is a safety switch it works with the shift lever. If the lever is not going all the way in park it well not let it start. And the leak would not have any thing to do with this.
