Pontiac Repair: hard to start car, metal shavings, vacuum leak

Question
hi, i have a 2001 grand prix. I let my brother drive it for a few months and when he gave it back it was a mess.  I guess one of ignition coils went bad on it.  By the time i got the car and fix the problem it was to late the catalytic converter was also gone on it.  The shop that change it said that it got cloged with metal shavings.  The car runs good now after the new catalytic was put on, but i have problems starting or keeping it on idle. I will start the car and it will turn off right away.  Now if step on the accelarator while cranking it and keep the rpms above 1500 for about 10 seconds then the car will stay on.  But i notice still that the rpms on idle after i do all this are still kind of low.  The car has new plugs and wires also. What do you recomend.  Your help will be greatly appreciated..thank you for your and patience.

Answer
Hi, check for a vacuum leak. may need to have the idle air valve checked. you can also clean the throttle body, you can do this with a can of carburetor cleaner and old tooth brush. remove the air cleaner pipe from the throttle body, and hold the throttle open, and spary the clean in the throttle body and take the tooth brush and clean the inside. it may be a little slow on starting but it well start. hope this is help some.
