Pontiac Repair: 1990 grandam, torque converter clutch, torque converter clutch solenoid

Question
My car when it gets hot will shudder to a stop when I'm required to slow down or stop at a light.  As long as i'm moving it's fine.  After stopping it may start, but the moment you put it into gear, it will immediately shudder to a stop again.  When shuddering it's almost as if it's unable to shift down. ( Hope it makes sense)  To get going again, requires allowing the car to cool.  Can you help with what possibly may be wrong.  My husband is able to make the repair if he can determine what is wrong.  Thank you in advance.  Vikki

Answer
This is a very common problem. You have a torque converter clutch solenoid that is sticking. It is inside the side cover on the transmission. It is not a major job to replace it. You can try it yourself or take it to just about any shop and they can have it fixed for you in just a couple of hours.
