Pontiac Repair: 1986 Pontiac Fiero GT V6 coolant temperature, pontiac fiero gt, 1986 pontiac fiero

Question
I recently purchased a 1986 Pontiac Fiero GT V6.  the coolant temperature normally runs at 170 degrees.  In traffic however, the coolant temperature will go to 230 degrees and then drop to 190 degrees and cycle that way every few minutes.  How do I get the coolant temperature to hold at 180 degrees in traffic?  Could the fan switch need to be replaced?  If so, what part number should I buy?  Someone recently suggested that I drill two small bypass holes in the side of the main thermastat.  I don't see how that would help.  Please advise.

Answer
You cant get the coolant temp to hold at 180. The stat normally opens at 195. Ther fan should turn on at about 226. Why would you want it to stay at a lower than normal temp? It sounds like everything is working the way that it is designed, so what is the problem?
Drilling holes in the stat will only help to remove unwanted air pockets by letting the coolant and unwanted air to bypass the stat when it is still closed.
