Pontiac Repair: Coil Tower, pontiac grand am, service engine soon light

Question
I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am SE, 5speed 4cyl
I took it to the dealership because when I step on the gas to accelerate quickly, it sputters rather than just goes. He said it was a coil, my spark plugs were fine, and something about a tower. I don't know much about the electrical stuff on an engine, but would like to know what to replace. He said it'll cost $375 parts and labor, which I don't have. My car still runs, but I need to fix it. Can you help me my good man? My service engine soon light was on, but I got it back yesterday, and it hasn't come back on. Thank you for any assistance. Josh

Answer
Well you didnt tell me what size engine you have other than a 4 cyl. There are 4 or 5 of them availiable in a 01 Grand AM. Since you said something about a tower, I'm assuming that it is a 2.3 or a 2.4 liter.
If you look at the top of the engine, there is an aluminum curved plate that hase the engine size on it. There are 4 bolts holding it on and a wire connector on the drivers side. Remove it. On the bootom side of the plate is a white plastic piece bolted to it. This is the tower. If you unbolt the tower from the plate you will find 2 coils and the ignition module. Now you know where all the parts are so you can replace whats needed.
When you go to put it back together, place the coils inside the tower 1st, then with the coils facing up, put the plate on top of it and flip it over. now bolt it back together. Now there will be 4 plastic and rubber sparkplug boots that will still be on the plugs. Remove them from the plug and put them on the tower. now put the whole thing back on the motor, making sure to get the boots back down onto the plugs.
Hope this helps.
