Pontiac Repair: power steering, cold climate, knurl

Question
I have A 95 Pont. Bonneville The power steering quit working. I figure it is the pump. while removing it from car shaft and pulley came off (did not pry or pull on it)should it slide out that easily? End of shaft has an angled Knurl on it. also would like to known what solenoid on pump does, and what ohms should be when checking.

Answer
The shaft on your PS pump is broken. You will need to replace the pump. I'm quessing you live in a cold climate because usually what happens is that when its cold, the PS fluid gets thicker than normal and when you start the car the puuley turn and shears off the shaft.
The solenoid is part of the VOES(variable oriface electronic steering). What this does is resrtict fluid flow a higher speeds for more steering control and increases flow during low speeds when you really need PS.
