Pontiac Repair: CV Joint Replacement, cv shaft, cv joint replacement

Question
My son drives a 98 Grand Prix 3800 V6.  The boot is damaged on the right hand CV.  We really struggled to get the CV shaft off the car.  What should we have done different?  We were not able to get the bolt off the steering arm.  We did get the lower ball joint off the lower control arm which helped.  Do we have to take off the control arm, the steering connections, everything?

Answer
Hi, this is what I do when I take one out.
I take the stabilizer bar a loose at the control arm this is a long bolt. Then I take the tie-rod a loose.
I take the balljoint a loose at the bottom of the steering knuckle, the bolt is under the CV boot at the hub. Then you take a long pry bar and pry the control arm down, then you pull it outward. This will be pulling the hub off the axle. You also may have to take the brake line a loose at the body.
