Porsche Repair: 1999 Boxster, boxster faq, porsche mechanic

Question
QUESTION: I have 1999 boxster with only 20K miles. I drove it the other day and when I turned it off I heard a small pop and the car would not start again. It has been determined not to be the battery and the porsche mechanic is telling me that I need to have the transmission pulled to see if something may be stuck in the flywheel or to see if the engine is blown. Does this make sense? I was thinking it seemed more like an ignition or electrical issue. Before the pop it ran fine. Have had no problems. Any advice would be appreciated.

ANSWER: Krissy,

Where did the "pop" noise come from, exhaust?

QUESTION: Thanks for your response. I could not really tell where the pop noise came from. My husband corrected me in that the pop actually occurred after we shut the car off and he went to start it again (30 seconds after we shut it off) to pull it up in the garage. That is when the "pop" occurred and it would not start. When we turn the key on it just clicks. My husband did say when we started it to drive before it died he thought there was a lot of exhaust smoke but we thought that was because it had not been driven for a couple of months.

Answer
I certainly would never say you have to pull the transmission to check engine fault codes, or to check for spark and fuel.

If you are a member of the Porsche Club, www.pca.org  (if not join today, great group of people and resources) you should be able to locate a good mechanic in your region or zone who can better help you with trouble shooting the no start issue and looking to see if there are any fault codes in the computer.  Not time to pull the engine or tranny just yet.
