Porsche Repair: 1977 Porsche 911, tig welder, rear tyre

Question
Thank you.
The wing refered to in my question is the body panel covering the rear tyre.

I have the book. It appears to suggest thst the only way to do this repair is to remove the rear fender and the side body panel over the rear tyre and the window.
Is it possible to do this repair without removing all theas parts?

Question -
I need to replace the outer sill. Only the part between the jacking point and the rear of the sill is rusted, as a previous owner has replaced the rest.
Questions that occur to me are:
-Does the whole sill need to be replaced?
-Can the rear of the sill  be attached to the body without removing the rear wing?

I have a TIG welder.

Can you advise on how to do the repair?

Hi William,

Sounds like you're an ambitious guy....  Without being there to actually inspect the parts you mention and the last repair, I'd be guessing more than advising.  So what I would recommend is getting a look at this book:

Porsche 911, Guide to Purchase and DIY Restoration by Lindsay Porter and Peter Morgan, published by Foulis and Haynes, 1988. ISBN#0-85429-475-9

Here's a place to buy one if you are inclined:

http://www.bookfinder4u.com/IsbnSearch.aspx?isbn=0854296840&mode=direct

You'll find these authors will talk your language and they show lot's of pictures of rusted rotten Porsche parts!  Just what you're looking for.

Answer
William,

I just don't have the intimate knowledge with 911's to comment...especially to contradict the reference I said was very good.  But...I'm all for creativity...and you can probably give it a try without the body panels coming off...since you've obviously given this some thought already!

The way to approach it might be to do it without removing the panels until it becomes clear why they advise to remove them.  Then you'll have to remove them.  What's the danger?  Perhaps you'll find yourself many steps ahead if you can do it.
