I have a 85' 911 with a 915 gear box. The strangest thing it is stuck in reverse, the gear shift moves I can run through 1-5 but the reverse light is on, but it won't go drive in reverse, it is like the hand brake is on. Is there something I can bleed to relieve the pressure of the transmission to get it out of reverse? Really strange, I know it's going to cost me.

Thanks,
Jerome

Hi Jerome...this does not sound like any fun at all!

I'm sorry, I'm not quite clear what is stuck, the gear shift lever, the transmission gears themselves, or what?

So answer this.

1)  When the car is off and just sitting the gear shift lever can be moved freely and it actually feels like each gear is being engaged like it is supposed to?

Each gear will allow me to run through it with no problem.

2)  If you start the car (with the clutch in I assume) the car will not move forward or backward...but the clutch can be let out and it feels like it's in reverse because the car wants to move in that direction?
With the clutch in the car will not move, if you let it out in neutral it will try to move backwards, it feels like the hand brake is on, but it is not.

With the cluth in it will move forward better than backward, in some cases, it is hard to push forward with the clutch in. Yes, it will try to move backwards with the clutch in neutral.

3)And the reverse light is on always?

Yes, the reverse light is always on and I found that out recently when my brother was helping me, that is when I found out the light is on regardless what gear I am in.

Thanks Dave!

Just trying to be clear so I can help you.

Answer
3-2-06 Hi again.  It sounds like the shift  linkage has separated from the transmission.  In the older cars there was an inspection panel where the linkage could be seen... it was on the floor nearest the back seat foot space.  Through this little access hole the connection between the shift linkage and the transmission itself could be adjusted.  It sounds like this connection came completely loose.
