HEY DAVE - MAYBE YOU CAN SHED SOME LIGHT - I HAVE A 944 I HAVE HAD FOR 6 MOTNHS OR SO AND HAVE PUT 50 MILES ON IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS - I JUST GOT TO IT. NEW TIRES AND RIMS NEW FRONT SEALS AND BALANCE SHAFT - TIMING BELT WATER PUMP AND RADIATOR.... *YEA IM SAVING THE WORLD FROM CLUTTERED JUNKYARDS*
ANYWAYS -MY 3 WORST PROBLEMS -

1 CONSTANTLY SEEPING HOT AIR FROM THE VENTS.. WHERE IS THIS INFAMOUS HEATER VENT CLIP IM LOOKING FOR?...
2 THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE HOT AIR SEEPAGE IS TO TURN ON THE AC - THIS MAKES THE IDLE ERRATIC..ROUGH.. I DONT THINK ITS GOOD FOR THE CAR.
3 ON TOP OF ALL THAT MY CLUTCH SLAPS WHEN I PUSH IN THE PEDAL SOMETIMES - IT GRINDS WHEN I LET OFF THE GAS AND ITS STILL IN GEAR  - AND WHEN IM AT A LOW RPM TAKING OFF IT VIBRATES BAD UNLESS I REV IT UP HIGHER... (NO CLUE HOW HIGH MY TACH WORKS WHEN IT WANTS TO)
CAR SEEMS TO "PULL" AT DIFFERENT STRENGTHS IN A SINGLE GEAR - MAYBE FUEL FILTER ? I GOT ONE I AM SWAPPING TOMORROW... I ALSO ORDERED A CLUTCH KIT BUT IM STILL SEARCHING FOR A FORKSHAFT NEEDLE BEARING PER SOMEONES ADVICE BEFORE I GET IN AND SWAP IT ALL OUT... KNOW A VENDOR?
ANY IDEAS ARE APPRECIATED. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. JEF

Hi Jef.

I've heard of this problem from others and it sometimes relates to the simple fact that the heater controls are not all that easy to figure out.  Before we start taking things apart, would you verify that the following is how you understabnnd and use the controls.  Write back to me and let me know.
1.  lower lever - temp control for heater.
1a. lever all the way to the left is outside air.
2.  upper left lever - left is air to footwells, right air to center of dash
3.  upper right lever - move lever to the right to direct air at windshield.

As for your clutch noise, there's a huge possibility your clutch disc is stock Porsche and that includes a rubberizzed center portion to absorb vibrations.  When this rubberized part becomes more brittle over time it weakens, and becomes much less vibration dampening... to the point it doesn't anymore...and then it fails.  There are many guys who will say they can live with the problem for many miles...but if you have already ordered the clutch kit, your problem will quickly be solved.

I really don't have any good info for the other items you mentioned.  Sorry.

Write back and let me know how things go.

your absolutely right - i had no idea what control does what - kina like all these switches that seem to do little.however - i stopped by a shop the other day and they told me sounds like a hot water control valve stuck - i checked and looks like it was removed and never replaced. I believe that to be the answer to my heater probs.

as far as the clutch goes. your right i got the kit so im going to do that and hope it helps alot - but you dont think that would cause the car to climb gears irrational do you? as in - i just hit 2nd and im throttling to the top and by the time i get to the top at say 65% throttle the car would pull at 60% sometimes and 80% other times more often at 60% but will kick in a little here and there. its pretty stange and annoying .. thanks for your help dave

I'm glad I could help.  The heater control valve takes a signal from one of those heater levers and either lets hot water into or stops it from coming into your heater core.  The fan behind the heater core then blows air across the hot core to warm up your footsies.  I suppose that someone could take out the control valve if let's say it was leaking and letting hot water into the heater core all the time, especially in the summer!  Even if the fan is off, the heated water so close to your feet would have an unpleasant effect.

As for the acceleration thing, I'm still thinking about that one.  Nothing I can imagine right now would be a logical answer.

Anyway, have fun with that clutch install.
