Dave:

The transmission of my porsche can be difficult to get into reverse and shifting from first to second does not seem to mesh correctly.  Is it one of the gears or syncro.

I'll bet it's neither the gears or the synchros.  Besides, if it turns out to be one of those two the $$$ signs will add up pretty fast.

It'd suggest you try another approach first.  Check out this article:

...and check out the website overall.  It has a ton of interesting and informative stuff...even on the descriptions of many of the part's listings.

The transmission referred to in the tech article is older than yours, but the principles are the same and the parts that are referred to wouldn't have changed all that much.
