Porsche Repair: Porsche Transmission, professional mechanic, greasy fingers

Question
Hello,
I just had my 1982 Porsche SC transmission rebuilt by a professional mechanic. It will not go into second gear without double clutching and forcing it into second. I never had any problem prior to the rebuild. My mechanic thinks it might be a bushing in the linkage, which wasn't a problem before the rebuild. It goes into second gear ok at low rpms, but not at normal driving speeds. I believe it is a problem with the second gear sychronizer, he doesn't think so and said "even if he tears it down again the problem may not be fixed". What do you think?

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Rick.

I think the mechanic owes you a transmission that works as if it was rebuilt, certainly MUCH better than it worked BEFORE he got his greasy fingers on it.

I suppose the problem could be a bushing in the linkage... and a second gear synchro... and a number of other things.  I have a trustworthy independent Porsche garage near me that could probably diagnose the problem fairly quickly.  I believe the "good" mechanics can do that by feel.  I certainly can't give you any assistance with the what's wrong part from here.

The issue, it seems, is who's going to pay for the remedial work that has to be done.  I don't know why this is so hard  for car service providers to get right...but you probably paid a pretty penny for your rebuilt transmission... and instead of taking the car back till its right the mechanic wants to say the problem must be with an area he didn't touch...therefore you'll owe more money!

And if he opens up the transmission again, you'll owe more money for that!!  'Cause his time is so valuable.

His responsibility was to make your transmission act like new.  That's what you paid for...that's what you should have.  With no more money out of your pocket.
