Porsche Repair: Fuse Panel, haynes manual, fuse panel

Question
I am new to the Porsche arena and have purchased a 1982 924. The brake lights, turn signals, and head light motor does not work. The Haynes manual does not list which fuse operates which circuit. There are 15 fuses on the main panel and about 6 or 8 more on a separate panel. Can you help?

Answer
Hi Matt,

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Porsches.  You wouldn't think something as easy as which fuse covers which function would be a stumper, would you?

Let's make sure we're both looking at the same Haynes manual.  Mine covers the 944 from '83 through '89.  I use it to answer 924 questions because Haynes doesn't have a separate 924 manual.  I'm looking at the wiring diagrams on pages 198-202.  Even thought these say they are for the '83 models, it looks like the closest we'll get to anything authoritative.

Unless you have a fuse legend, like in an owners manual or under the cover of the fuse box lid, your next major task will be to identify each and every function of the car and relate it to a fuse.  You'll spend some time on this but you'll need this information over and over again while you own this car.

Likewise, you'll want to verify my findings... this is what I think the wiring diagrams are telling us:

Brake lights:  fuse 6, 8 amps
Right turn signals:  fuse 13, 8amps
Left turn signals:  fuse 14, 8 amps
Headlight conceal motor:  fuse 1, additional fuse board, 15 amps

Once you put new fuses in these spots, verify the component works, then verify that when the fuse is removed the component won't work.  That's the only way to know for sure.

If my reading of the diagram is correct, Haynes has the info, it's just very hard to decipher.

If this isn't clear or you'd like to ask another question, please feel free to use the Allexperts follow-up question feature.

Above all else, I'm sure you bought this car to have fun with it.  Go forth, my son, and drive,

Dave
