RV Repair: Dometic Refrigerator, honda 2000, boat motor

Question
I have a absorption type refrigerator on my boat. It operates on AC and DC as
well as LPG. I wont to use it when I anchor out for a few days without running
my engine to recharge the battery. Would it be practical to use a portable
generator like a Honda 2000 watts? Would the generator have to run
continuously?I notice that some boats only run generators two hours a
day.Would the  generator provide AC or DC power? The fridge works better
on AC.

Answer
The boats you see are running the generator to recharge the batteries on the boat.  Their fridges are likely running on battery power.  The generator is cheaper to run than starting the boat motor, plus saves hours on the motors.  You can get generators to run ac power, but you would have to have it running most of the day to provide the power to the fridge.  As far as the practicality of the generator, you have to weigh the cost of it against the cost of running the boat motor to charge the battery.  If you plan to anchor out often, the generator may be a good idea.  Uses less gas to run and saves the boat motors.
