RV Repair: Electric Brake, fifth wheel, pin connector

Question
QUESTION: On my fifth wheel there is a back feed on the wire to my electric brake. Is there an easy way to find the problem. I've tried every thing I can think of. Thanks

ANSWER: George, I don't quite understand what you mean by a back feed? Are you having one of them go to ground? The best way to find trouble with the brakes is to unhook from the vehicle and pull the emergency break away. Then you should be able to go to each brake and see if it is working. You can also try cutting the wires to the brakes and hooking them up one at a time and seeing which one is giving you trouble. Chances are that one of the magnets has encountered a broken wire in some way and it is going to ground. Thanks, Bill

QUESTION: Thank you for your response. What I mean by back feed is I'm getting power to my brake wire when I'm not hooked up to my 7 pin connector. so my blue brake wire is live when it should be dead.I tried the break away switch already and tried moving the fifth wheel and it seemed that the brakes didn't work. I've had back surgery and didn't want to have to jack the thing up but I guess I might have to. I suppose I will have to trace the wires see where the wire is being feed. Again thank you.

Answer
George, Ok now I understand what is happening and if it were me I would check at the plug because this can happen there and does quite often. You can cut 1 wire to the breakaway and that will take it out of the system. The only other place that the brakes can get power from is the main plug wire and if you haven't pulled it out with the truck and not your hand then I would say it is in the plug, although if you have pulled on it that way then you might want to replace the plug wire completely. You need to look at the black wire and the blue wire to make sure there is no connection. I hope this helps, Bill
