RV Repair: Re: New first time RV owner, first time rv owner, winnebago chieftain

Question
Hi Bill-

First of all- love this Q & A site. Just found it tonight. I've been reading it for a good hour and getting very educated thanks to you. My question is this- I recently paid a visit to the RV dealership to get some small fixings done and had a discussion with the owner. We were talking about my RV- a 1986 22' Winnebago Chieftain. I am basically using it right now for going to sporting events and concerts. The interior seems to be in pretty good condition except the one wall (the paneling) by the dinette which is somewhat warped. I asked him in general how well my Winnebago is built and he literally scared the crap out of me. He said it was not "framed" and the walls were simply made of paneling, styrofoam, and fiberglass. He went on to say that if I were ever involved in a motor vehicle accident- me rear ending someone, someone rear ending me, or being broad-sided- nothing would be left of this motor home. It would crumble like a cardboard box. Is this true? Second question- How many good years can I still get out of this vehicle as far as not having any serious electrical problems, remaining life expectancy of my Onan Genset 1 generator, etc.? Thanks for your response.

Sincerely,
Allen

Answer
Allen, Well the dealer told you pretty much the truth. They don't have much framing in Winnebago's and they get their strength from the bonding of the materials. As far as how long you will be able to get good use of the coach is dependant on the shape it is in and how well you take care of it. Everything dies sometime but it is a matter of how well it has been taken care of. Thanks, Bill
