RV Repair: atwood water heater, hot water heater, volt power

Question
we have a 1998 terry 5th wheel and in cleaning it up this spring the hot water heater won't work on electric mode. It works fine when I switch to propane. Short of taking it in for repair is there anything I can check or a replace I am not afraid to tear into something if I know what to look for. It's an Atwood GC6aa-9E 6gal.

thanks

Answer
Walt, What you will need to check is the electric element. On Atwoods they are usually located in the rear side of the water heater. Pull the wires off and check to see that there is continuity between the 2 posts. If there is the element is good. Then you might want to check the T-Stat for electric(if there is one on this model) and make sure there is continuity there as well. About the last thing you can check is the 110 power and see if it is making it to the element, or in some cases to the relay located in the rear. They have changed that model with upgrades and I am not sure of the year they did this in but if there are 2 plug connectors on the outside igniter board it will not have another T-Stat in the rear. If there is a relay in the rear you can also check to see that the 12 volt power is going to the relay and that when it is there the relay closes. That is about all you can test for and I am sure that you should find the trouble in one of these places. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. Thanks, Bill
