RV Repair: making a pop up lighter (weight less), tent camper, pop up tent trailer

Question
QUESTION: Is it possible to remove the heavy plywood, in a pop up camper, to lighten it enough to be pulled by a 4 cyl. car?  I really only need 1 bed. And what about the roof?
I have removed the sink already.

Thanks

ANSWER: Mary, I am not sure what heavy plywood you want to remove. Anything that is not part of the structure should be able to be removed. I am also guessing this is a pop up tent trailer and not actually a camper, as campers at least all that I have seen go in the bed of pickups. They do make what is called a "Tear Drop" pull trailer and they are small enough that you could pull it with just about anything. They are small and really only have a bed in them, although some have a little more than that. The way you can decide on whether you can lighten it up enough is to remove all you wan out of it and take it to some place that will weigh it for you and then find out how much your car is able to tow. The dealer should know what that is and even before you remove everything you want you can see what it weighs and guess on how much weight you can remove. I hope that this helps you and if not please feel free to ask me more specific detailed questions and I will do my best to help. Thanks, Bill

QUESTION: Bill,
Sorry for not giving more details.  Yes, I have a pop up tent camper-crank up model.  It has the 2 slide out beds.  I know it is too heavy for my car to pull. (would love to buy a Livin Lite Quicksilver 5.0 @500lbs but too pricey)
So I thought I'd modify what I have buy replacing the plywood bed with something lighter (any suggestions?) Or just removing 1 bed altogether... Also, would it be possible to remove some of the storage space since it seems to be wood framed?  AND where in the world (Milwaukee specifically!)could I get it weighrd?
Thanks, Mary

Answer
Mary, You should be able to remove anything that isn't part of the structure but you might want to put something in the place of the bed so the canvas has a place to go. This is going to be like a judgement call that you make. To weigh it you should be able to go to a set of scales. They are where truckers have to check in and possibly at a truck stop as well. You will need to call around and find out where you can get that done. Thanks, and I hope this helps, Bill
