RV Repair: onan 4000 generator, unit thanks, gas filter

QUESTION: My gen. will only start by overriding the choke manually and then will run fine for about 2-3 min till it gets warm and then dies out. Then will not restart even if choked. It sounds like it wants to run but will not.  Gas tank is full and batteries are new.

ANSWER: It sounds like it hasn't been run in awhile and the fuel system needs to be cleaned. Check the fuel filter to see that it is flowing good. You might even want to change the plugs and the oil. Onan makes a carb cleaner that you can spray into the carb throat while it is running. Be sure to use the whole can. If this doesn't want to make it run then I would take it to a repair shop that works on Onan.

QUESTION: I will try to get some carb cleaner. I found where the gas line comes into the bottom of the gen. It is a rubber gas line into a metal line outside the bottom of the gen.  Do you know where the gas filter is on this unit?

I'm not quite sure exactly where that particular one is but it will either be right at the inlet to the carb or back farther on the line. You should be able to get a book on that particular model and that will tell you exactly where it is. But try going to onanindiana.com and they have something on your generator.
